Knitting Blog #1: Discover My New Hobby in 2024 – From Crocheting to Knitting!

Knitting has become my new hobby in 2024. I found that knitting is soothing, calming, and interesting. I also feel very proud of myself every time I finish a project.

It All Started with a Fluffy Koala Bear

I first started with crocheting after coming across a crocheting kit of a koala bear at a shop. It was on sale, so I thought I could give it a try and make a big doll. I did it, but it didn’t look very nice… After some practice and watching some YouTube videos, I bought some cheap supplies from Hobbycraft in the UK to really get started.

It was quite an exciting time since I found that the yarn and needle I needed to start were affordable. I crocheted for about two months and made some dolls, a cardigan, two bags, and some coasters (which I will show in the next blog!). My final purchase of crochet-related items was at a local yarn store, where I got some bamboo & cotton yarn for a granny square daisy bag. That’s my final project in crocheting before I started knitting!

How I Started Knitting

I started really young when my Grandma was still alive. The girls at my school were obsessed with knitting scarves when we were 13. I knitted for a winter, and that was it.

While I was at the yarn shop earlier this year, we chatted about my excitement about crocheting a bag, and the owner told us about his knitting projects. He mentioned how crochet projects are much faster to complete compared to knitting projects. We thought, “Oh, so there’s no point in starting knitting; I should stick with crocheting…”

After a day or two, I came across some beautiful garment projects in some YouTube videos, which are called knitting podcasts. I found those very intriguing as the YouTubers talked about their knits for a long time, discussing different projects. I couldn’t stop watching the amazing ideas and projects.

So, I went back to Hobbycraft to buy a pair of 4.5mm circular needles. At that time, I had no idea about swatches and gauges. I already had some acrylic yarn at home, so it was easy to get started!

My First Ever Knitting Project

My first knitting project was an unfinished cardigan, yes! I chose a rather difficult project to start with. To be fair, it’s just the sleeves that are taking me forever to finish; it looks like a v-neck vest at the moment, which I’m wearing at home. I learned a lot, and that was a lot of fun! It all begins here.
